Don’t Eat Out Before You Read This!

BreakingNewsAs of January 1, 2007 Sacramento County will be the first in California to post color-coded signs displaying inspection results for food facilities.

The Sacramento Board of Supervisors this last year passed a law to take effect 2007 where the consumer will know if any establishment serving or selling food has passed inspection. Signs will be posted in full view before you enter a restaurant or grocery store, bakeries, school cafeterias, sandwich shops, fast food restaurants, dine-in restaurants, coffee houses and mini marts so that you the customer know if the establishment has been inspected. Check out the restaurants that have been closed down, so far

The inspections will occur more frequently and have rigorous standards to be met. Bathrooms will have to sparkle, kitchens gleaming, food storage and equipment must be fully functional, and safety condition must be met. Inspection reports of facilities will be available at http://www.foodinspect.saccounty.net.

This month, it is projected that we will start seeing notices at 5,500 eating establishments around Sacramento County and by July every establishment should have been checked and be showing the signage. What you will be looking for are signs before you walk in that will let you know if this is a sanitary place to eat or not.

Violations include improper food temperatures, poor personal hygiene, contaminated equipment and pest infestations. It was said that 40% of the restaurants have major violations at the time of initial inspection. Major meaning violations that are identified by the Disease Control as being associated with food-born illness, said Sacramento County Environmental Heath representative Mel Knight.

In the past two months Sacramento County has closed 14 restaurants for health violations which I will identify later in this article.

PassBe sure to know what the signs look like and what they mean , a green sign is a high level of compliance achieved. When you see this green sign it means that the facility has been inspected and has passed all the vigorous inspections. Inspections vary by the type of facility. Those that prepare food will increase from 2 routine inspections per year to 3 per year. Retail markets and pre-packaged food facilities that do not prepare food will increase from 1 to 2 routine inspections per year.

A Yellow sign is a Conditional Pass which means that violations were Conditional Passobserved that required immediate correction and a follow-up inspection. The owner has an opportunity to correct the problem before the next inspection. This seems to be somewhat like a traffic stop proceed if you wish but with CAUTION.

Red-Closed

And then, of course is the red sign when there is immediate danger or contamination which requires the closing of the facility. The operation will cease until the conditions are brought up to standard and reinspection has occurred. Once a Red sign has been placed, the improvements have been made and a green sign is visible, the dates that the facility was red will be indicated on the green sign.

This is taking effect right now all over Sacramento County, specifically in Sacramento, Folsom, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove, Isleton and Galt as well as in unincorporated areas of the County.

Here is a list of 14 restaurants that Sacramento county has closed for health violations:

Remember to check the County website and the color of the sign which should be in full view of the establishments that you frequent before you walk-in.

I wonder how long before Placer and El Dorado Counties follow suit???
